Decimal odds explained: return, implied probability and margin

Updated · Tanzania Bet Guide · 18+

Calculate gross returns and see why bookmaker prices do not form a neutral probability forecast.

01Return = stake × odds
02Implied chance = 1 ÷ odds

Separate return from profit

Decimal odds multiply the stake to produce a gross winning return. At 1.80, a hypothetical TZS 5,000 stake returns TZS 9,000 if successful, including the original stake. Gross profit is therefore TZS 4,000 before any applicable deductions. Comparing prices is easier when every example uses the same definition.

Convert a price into an implied percentage

Divide one by the decimal price. Odds of 2.00 imply 50%; 4.00 imply 25%. This converts the price mathematically, but it does not establish the true chance of an event. Bookmakers set prices with margin and other commercial considerations, and estimates about sport can be wrong.

See the margin in a two-outcome example

Imagine an event with exactly two exhaustive outcomes, each priced at 1.90. Each implies about 52.63%, giving a total of 105.26%. The amount above 100% is an overround illustration. It is not a guaranteed profit figure for every match or every player, but it shows why the quoted prices are not a fair probability distribution. You can calculate the bookmaker margin with the same prices and compare the implied percentages.

Compare identical markets

A 90-minute football price cannot be compared directly with a qualification price including extra time. Check the market wording, settlement rules and acceptance time. A better headline price can be irrelevant if it refers to a different outcome or is no longer available when the bet is accepted. The guide to football market rules and settlement explains how match-result, qualification and other markets differ.

Avoid false certainty

A short price means a smaller gross payout per unit staked; it does not make a bet safe. Combining many short-priced selections can create a fragile accumulator. Calculations help explain exposure, not predict a winner, and staking more to recover a previous loss increases the amount at risk.
